Mental Health care: Healthy living

The importance of mental health can not be overlooked in today's fast paced world. We find several hurdles in living a life which is stress free, peaceful and calm. Besides there are many mental illnesses that have emerged in our society. One out of every five adult Americans suffers with mental illness. Mental health problems occuring during old age include dementia, delirium, psychosis, schizophrenia, Adult Attention Deficit Disorder and depression. There are also sleep disturbances, a change in appetite and mood differences. Elders suffering with mental health problems tend to have abnormal cognitive and behavioral patterns that are often associated with decreased ability to function. Unfortunately in most cases, mental health problems in elders that require treatment are quite conveniently ignored. There are several reasons that contribute to improper mental health services to the elderly. Some of them are listed below:

Even in this modern era, people are reluctant to undergo treatment for their mental health disorder. They continue to harbor their minds with discomfort and stigmas, thereby showing resistance to leaving their homes and going to a rehabilitation center or a clinic. Anxiety and depresison can be serious too. Being anxious and or depressed most of the time makes enjoying life and experiencing any consistent sense of satisfaction unattainable. Meditation can be a good tool for enhancing mental health and eradicate most of mental health problems.

The society has never shown respect or dignity for individuals suffering from mental health problems. Some people suffering from serious problems like Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Depression and the like need special care and the socity has failed to give them. Mental health professionals are apprehensive about an elderly person with such conditions.Medical negligence and lack of responsibility from mental health professionals and services is another big hurdle. It's tough at times for the people to be diagnosed properly and symptoms of mental health diseases are just written off as indicators of ageing.

For proper mental health care, we all need to be aware of the diseases and get informed of the problems that people with mental illnesses are suffering from.
